Biography: Borgia was a Spanish-Italian noblewoman, born of the House of Borgia, daughter of Pope Alexander VI and Vannozza dei Cattanei. Unusually she ruled as Governor of Spoleto, whereas usually this position had been held by cardinals. She was renowned for her excellence in poetry and oration as well as her for her administrative prowess.

Her political career was aided by several arranged marriages, but also for her having had a full education in an age when most women were educated solely at convents. This gave her a firm grasp in the humanities and she was fluent in Spanish, Catalan, Italian, and French.
